Going out in Novi Sad

Around venue

As the venue is on the major crossroad, there are literally countless options to get something to eat, drink or to exchange money.

Food

Serbian food and fast food is not too different from the most of the Europe. Very close to the venue you can find a lot of places - restaurants and fast foods.

If you would prefer to check local fast food, you may try some of the grills that offer grilled hamburgers, pork or white chicken meat. Little help for beginers: pljeskavica (pleskavitza) is grind mixed meat mostly beef but with some pork meat, like hamburger; ćevap (tschevap) is the same mixture but in shape of sticks; vešalica (veshalitza) is pure pork meat of top quality; pileće (piletsche) is white chicken meat grilled). You may ask for spices (salt, pepper, aleva red hot paprika), toppings like mayonnaise and ketchup and additions (=salad) that could be tomato, cabbage or green salad. Any of these is heavy meal that will keep you feeling full until evening.

The Camelot GastroPub is unique and popular place to visit for nice food and hanging out. You may enjoy their menu of cooked meals but we specifically refer you to their own brewed beer (light, dark and red), domestic rakija (like schnaps, strong spirit ~40% alcohol) and domestic wine.

Those fond of Chinese food may enjoy excellent Dunja kineski restoran where one may find many meals that are vegetarian or with chicken, pork and beef meat. You can also choose between regular, integral and rice with curry and many different vegetables. You can take food with you or sit  inside or in front of the restaurant and enjoy twatching the beautiful Trg mladenaca (The Newlyweds Sqare).

Those looking for vegetarian and vegan restaurant may find one at Ananda restaurant that is quite near.

Serbs also like to eat at bakeries, where you can buy a lot of different tasty pastries. Most of the food cost around 1€ and will help you feel full. You can find acfew bakeries at the corners nearby.

Drink

In Serbia you may find all the drinks you can find everywhere, from world famous beer brands to local ones. Carbonated drinks and juices are also just as common as anywhere. What is different are strong spirits like rakija (rakia) named loza (made of grapes) and many varieties distilled from fruits like dunja (quincy), kajsija (apricot), šljiva (plum). Be careful as they are very strong and strike hard on an empty stomach. There are local beers like Jelen (Deer) or Lav (Lion) and some locally produced under license like Tuborg, Staropramen and Nikšićko. All are of good quality and are recommended.

Nightlife

Novi Sad has a wide range of places to go out and enjoy its nightlife. In fact, there is a street  in the centre of the city which has numerous clubs, bars, pubs and cafes. Laze Telečkog street is usually crowded over the weekend, but there are places in which parties and various events, like karaoke or pub quizes, are organized every night. Pedestrian area in the centre is also filled with places to go out, so it's a little bit hard to choose which one to visit, especially if you are a first time visitor. We would like to recommend some of our favorite places to enjoy a nightlife in Novi Sad, keeping in mind that not everyone has the same idea of fun and going out.

The Irish Pub Red Cow is located in the center of the city. It has a pleasant interior, and it's more "friends enjoying drinks, chat and a good music" type of fun.

PUBeraj is the home of great music, cool hairstyles&beards and excellent drinks. Let’s hang out, let’s have a smile! Located in Laze Telečkog street.

Martha's Pub is located in the famous Laze Telečkog street, too. It's an "altenative folks" type of place.

Cuba libre is a nice place with moderate drink prices and frequent promotions. You may expect good local rakija but also tequila. Music is popular, commercial house mix but surely a place to release excesses of energy through dancing.

Pivnica Gusan (The Gander Brewery) Nice place, excellent beer and great choice of meals makes this place perfect for a hangout after a hard day. Their Red beer is recommended.

Foxtrot cafe is not far away from the venue and can offer you pleasant atmosphere and jazz rock music.

Exchange

There are a lot of exchange offices everywhere. You will easily spot them because they have two numbers on large displays, like 116.80 and 118.30 which is current exchange rate. Sometimes you may buy something with EUR but that is not regular practice you can expect here and, in fact, it is illegal, the only legal tender is RSD or Serbian Dinar. There are few banks and ATM machines near the venue. Overall difference is not too big for small amounts and exchange shops are as safe as banks. If you have extra RSD at the end of your stay, you may easily convert that back to EUR. Metal EUR coins are not accepted nor offered and all paper notes (5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500) are in use. For bigger amounts and for USD you may be asked to show your Passport for identification as a precaution against counterfeit and money laundry, so do not be surprised if asked.
